Transport Within The Netherlands
The Netherlands has an excellent, easy-to-use public transport network. Trains are efficient and punctual and ticket machines in stations have an English language option.
To use local trams and buses, you'll need a strippenkaart. You can buy strippenkaarts at tobacco shops, supermarkets, train stations, newsagents and post offices. When you get on a tram or bus, tell the driver or conducter where you're going and they'll stamp your card for you. The number of strips stamped depends on the length of your journey - a single journey in one zone is two strips. Some trams don't have a conductor so you'll have to stamp your strippenkaart yourself in one of the small yellow machines. If you're not sure how many strips to stamp, check on the 9292OV Journey Planner. You can use the same strippenkaart for several people. Trams have display boards that display the next stop so it's easy to know when to get off.
